περι ἵππῶν (“peri hippown”)

Their swiftness, bounding over the wooden gate
Surpassing camels, donkeys, and goats,
Hooves flashing sunlight, piercing the substrate
Then joyously noshing on carrots and oats.

I do fear the power, but admire the will
Hear the voices, astonish at the vigor
That to friends brings great thrill,
After labor, drills, and rigor.

True sweetness olfactory I cannot connect
(Nor unruffled acumen, or brilliance of wit)
To that most-regal creature. I must always respect
Those who persist unabated, to the beast’s benefit.

Imagining, hoping... could I share the same bond?
Perhaps the horizon will be closer (as I am to my envoy)
‘Til then of course I’ll not depart, nor will I abscond
For my heart is e’er cheered when in them you find joy.
