Oh, it's still up there; go ahead and click. No 404 errors; everything's running just fine. But it's all changed. Changed by whom? you ask.
By its purchaser, Amazon.com . Now it has the same exact features as Amazon. Not that that's an especially bad thing to be, but compared with the old CDNow, it's really missing something.
The old site was really nice; it had special features like interviews and best-of-genre lists. It had better-written reviews of their wares, for the most part (although it lacked customer reviews.) And most importantly, it had more and better sound samples for most of their CDs; Amazon just has crappy little Real Audio samples, usually for only half of the songs on a record.

The OLD:
The NEW:
And all of that's gone now... Why couldn't Amazon leave all of that good stuff on the site, or at least incorporate the old goodies onto the new Amazonized site? Who knows? Their dinky little "alliance" page doesn't explain.
This all probably sounds hypocritical of me; I sometimes link to the Amazon site as a "partner" in hopes that somebody will buy some goodies and leave me with a portion of the proceeds. Whatever. I don't dislike Amazon. Not at all. I just like options. And CDNow was the better option for music, into it was steamrolled and homogenized into an Amazon clone, of which on the Internet there are already too many.
